Located 28 km from Vilnius, surrounded by lakes, the former capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuaniais now famous for its 15th century Insular Castle housing a museum with displays of prehistoric findings and the 17th-18th century objects d’art. The Trakai Castle situated on an island in the midst of Lake Galve is the most famous and most photographed castle in Lithuania. The five-storey, redbrick fortifications were constructed by the Grand Duke Vytautas in the second half of 14th century.
